John Woo’s Silent Night ends with a big question about his main character, Contractor gone Gangslayer Brian Godlock, is he alive or is he dead? But, first question first, how did he end up in such situation? Well, let’s recall a little.

In the fictional Lone Star border city of Las Palomas, a shooting between gangs takes the life of little Taylor Godlock when he was getting ready to celebrate christmas with his father, Brian (Joel Kinnaman) and his mother Caya (Catalina Sandino Moreno). To add more to the revenge pot, when trying to reach his son’s killer, a gangster called Playa (Harold Torres), Brian is shot in his neck, unable to speak afterwards.

For one whole year, Brian prepares himself physically, learning how to use knives in close body struggles, learning how to use different kind of guns, automatic weapons and even how to render his car almost bulletproof. The rest of the movie is Brian facing the gang that killed his son, until he finally is face to face with Playa. With some help of Detective Dennis Vassel, the cop in charge of the case, Brian finally gets to kill Playa, but he is in very bad shape after receiving close range shots, numerous beatings and even some stabs.

Now, to the question if the man is dead or alive, it depends on how much money the movie makes in the first two weekends. If Lionsgate see that the revenue against budget is very lucrative, it won’t be too long before announcing the sequel. But if it doesn’t go that well on the Box Office, we can assume that Brian Godlock is dead. Very Schrodingerish, right?

Where is Las Palomas in John Woo’s Silent Night?

Did you just watch John’s Woo «Silent Night» and now you’re wondering where in America is this dangerous and offbeat town? First things first, Las Palomas is not a real town. Las Palomas is a fictional town created specifically for this movie by screenwriter Robert Archer Lynn, stating a deep contrast between the peaceful and almost magical name (The Doves, in Spanish) and the cut-throat violence within the city limits. Now we know Las Palomas is not a real town, where is located in the universe of Silent Night?

All the license plates shown in the film scream of a Lone Star location, in the Big State of Texas, not that far from the border. Now, if you ask me, the general vibe of Las Palomas is way far removed from the Texas vibe, feeling more like a So-Cal town, maybe closer to a San Bernardino’s energy, perhaps?

Though clearly a melting pot for people of Latin American descent (México, Central & South America), John Woo makes a good job to establish Las Palomas as an american town, maybe with the clear intention to show that danger, crime and drugs are not a thing just below the South Border.

But if you find a little bit hard to believe that there is somewhere in America looking like Las Palomas does, even right next to the border, you are right. All that we see in the movie, the whole Las Palomas, is just Mexico City. In fact, the whole movie was shot in the mexican capital.

What if everything you consider normal, suddenly disappears? No more cell phones, no more music services, no more streaming movies, no more news alerts, no more online payments, no more people everywhere you go. What if for the first time in years you have to face the question of your own identity, without football teams, or movie genres, or political parties, or religions, or anything that defines you? What will you be reduced to?

Leave The World Behind makes a smart cinematographic approach to those questions under Sam Esmail’s clever direction and Julia Robert’s greatest performance in years. But now, if in the midst of the grounded ships, the falling planes, the massive cyber attacks, the interpersonal conflicts, and the forbidden interests, you still have no idea what was going on in this movie, do not worry, because now and without further ado, we will explain the ending and everything else about this movie in detail. Let’s go.

1 ^ What is going on in Leave The World Behind? Is it a Civil War? An Invasion? An Attack?

Two big clues to understand what really happens in the film: 1) what G.H. (Mahershala Ali) tells Clay after leaving Danny’s (Kevin Bacon) house, and 2) what Rose (Farrah McKenzie) finds in the Thornes’ bunker.

From what G.H. tells Clay we know, in the universe of Leave The World Behind , the United States is under a coordinated attack, executed with extraordinary precision by some organization that wants to take power of the country and do it on a very low budget. Just as G.H. said, the plan has three stages: isolation, synchronized chaos, and collapse.

The first stage – isolation – consists of launching a massive and coordinated attack on the country’s entire communications and transportation system. Through an army of hackers, this organization managed to block the Internet, Radio, Television and all satellite communication in the United States, and managed to penetrate the whole transportation network that works with autopilots, such as oil tankers, airplanes, and of course, electric cars. In this way, not only is the country’s population is isolated, but also immobilized, leaving limited resources in the cities over which the population would soon enter into conflict.

The second stage – synchronized chaos – seeks to alter the psyche of the population with very well-planned attacks. And finally the collapse, caused by the country’s own population when they fight for their resources, or worse, when they want to eliminate the supposed cause of the chaos.

2 ^ What is the noise that is heard throughout the film? Where does it come from?

The noise heard during the film, as Danny seems to suggest, is a sonic weapon that uses microwaves at very high intensity, which can result in permanent damage to the body of anyone who is exposed to it, like Archie. The noise is part of the second stage of the attack that the United States is under, and together with the pamphlets in Arabic, Chinese, or Korean, which are found throughout the country, they leave the way clear for it to be consumed. the third stage, the collapse.

It is possible that this sonic weapon is in the same drones that are dropping the red pamphlets with fake information about an upcoming military invasion.

3 ^ Why did Archie’s teeth fall out? Why are deer and other animals behaving strangely?

The effect of the sonic weapon that they are using throughout the country not only generates alterations in human tissues, but also in animals, causing their behavioral patterns to alter, which is why we see birds flying by the hundreds towards New York, or hundreds of deer grouping together, trying to escape the strange noise.

This attacks were also acknowledged in the media, when they informed that natural disaster took place in The South, most probably caused by disoriented groups of animals.

4 ^ Who is bombing cities in the United States?

The attack seems to be a joint action of radical elements within the United States (who were in charge of all the local destruction), and foreign elements, who – with a small budget – want to take down the government of the United States. Now, the pamphlets were clearly intended to create panic among the population and make them believe that they were under imminent attack and that they must seek shelter and supplies at any cost, in effect creating a civil war.

Now, moving on to what we saw in the Thornes’ bunker, in addition to the seasons of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Friends, it is an information system that was not altered by the initial attack, an oscilloscope, which can detect lengths of tiny, or exaggeratedly large, waves that are not used within normal radio, television, or internet channels, and that indicated that 1) Washington DC and other cities are under attack by Rogue Armed Forces, and that 2) several population centers show high levels of radiation.

What is happening then? The main objective of the cyber attack was not the civil population, it was to disconnect the United States Armed Forces, which is why, after the massive disinformation attack, some of the local armed bases dedicated themselves to trying to control the main urban centers, and once there, they were attacked by other groups armed with nuclear weapons, who were made to believe that the enemy was within those cities. The plan is actually very simple, you disconnect the military bases from each other, and you make them believe that the enemy, the one that caused the blackouts, the communications crash, and the war propaganda are indeed in neighbor cities. Now it is just a matter of time that they start attacking each other, even with nuclear weapons, just like the civil population is in conflict for the few resources left.

5 ^ Who is behind the attack on the United States?

We all know the answer, but let’s elaborate on it. It is very interesting that Danny confirmed in a physical newspaper (that sounds weird) that Russian diplomats in the United States have left the embassy to return to Moscow. And it is also notable that none of the pamphlets mentioned are in Russian. So, within the context of the film, who is behind the chaos of the United States is not China, or North Korea, or Iran. It is Russia.

6 ^ What’s wrong with Amanda Sandford? Why does she hate people?

Amanda Sandford is a typical case of a misanthropist. But what in the world is that?

Misanthropy is the general hatred, dislike, or distrust of the human species, human behavior, or human nature. A misanthrope or misanthropist is someone who holds such views or feelings. Misanthropy involves a negative evaluative attitude toward humanity that is based on humankind’s flaws. Misanthropes hold that these flaws characterize all or at least the great majority of human beings. They claim that there is no easy way to rectify them short of a complete transformation of the dominant way of life. [1]

Misanthropy is not a psychological disorder, which should be treated with medicines, as seems to be the trend these days for everything you may find, it is just a point of view that generally comes from negative experiences around the construction and social context from which the individual comes. For Amanda, her job, in which she must read people very well, to sell them things they do not need, has allowed her to glimpse that human beings, in general – and including herself – are a species that destroys everything, only for meeting frivolous and superficial standards in front of other people with whom they have no ties other than sharing common spaces.

However, Amanda’s arc in the film involves understanding that the cause of her misanthropy is precisely the need she has for other people and not being self-sufficient, and Ruth (Myha’la) has a lot to do with that, because although she also considers that the human being, in general, is a negative element, she understands that the definition of human being is useless if it does not go through the ties that are established with other people.

7 ^ What does the end of Leave The World Behind mean?

Leaving The World Behind follow the trend of not having an explicit conclusion, apparently leaving an ending open to interpretation. But it’s not like that. The film, although it does not explicitly show what is going to happen, does leave all the ends closed, making it very easy to infer what is going to happen, and here is the list:

  1. Rose finally gets to watch the final episode of Friends at the Thorne house.
  2. Amanda and Ruth find Rose, and thus find the bunker where they can stay and survive until things calm down.
  3. The Scotts and the Sandfords form an alliance to survive once the civil war expands to suburban and rural territories.

8 ^ What is the message of the movie Leave The World Behind?

The film has two messages, the human and the political. The human is embodied by the character of Julia Roberts, who in fact states that what makes us human, worthy and capable of surviving even the worst adversities, are the bonds we form when we consider others as worthy as ourselves. When despite our differences and mistakes, we consider every human being on the planet as worthy as we ourselves. Without that consideration, we soon simply fall. This is also demonstrated by Clay, that if he had not had that great sense of trust with others, as he had with G.H., and later with Danny, he possibly would not have survived.

Now the political message is much more subtle but is fully connected to the previous one. It is no surprise that we are in a world under an ethereal cyberwar, where the simplest way to destroy a country is by forcing its population to not consider their own compatriots as human beings, to suspend any kind of communication with someone who is and thinks differently (isolation), that they panic when they believe that the other side is their enemy and affects their survival (synchronized chaos) and then they take to the streets to destroy each other (social outbreak, strikes). The United States, Chile, Colombia, France and Ecuador are just some examples where this same idea- extrapolated in the film – has occurred.

It is not that Leave The World Behind warns us of something that could happen, it is that it informs us of something that has already happened, of how we are manipulated within our own borders, through social networks, and how we come out, like sheep, to hate each other, while a minority enjoys the money and power given to them in the midst of chaos. A certain coup d’état. How long are we going to be victims of this type of manipulation? How far will we be able to go?

9 ^ Who was sleeping in the cabin in the woods? Who is the owner?

Well, first of all we must remember that Leave The World Behind is based on the novel of the same name written by Rumaan Alam, who has indicated in several interviews that he wrote his book taking advantage of and at the same time altering the common spaces of horror, such as, for example, the family that goes on a trip, the strangers that knock on the door in the middle of the night, the animals surrounding a house, the cabin in the forest and the strange figures marked on the floor. Generally these clichés develop into something terrifying and deadly as the stories progress, but in the book and movie they are just hints that something bad may happen, but never comes in the end. So the mark of the person in the cabin is simply someone who rents one of the local things to hunt and uses that position to rest between shots. No more.

10 ^ Where is Point Comfort?

Point Comfort is a fictional place that, in the universe of Leave The World Behind is a suburban community located in Long Island. According to the reference points in the movie, Point Comfort is a fictional version of Sands Point in Long Island. The movie was filmed in Old Westbury (where the house is located), Westchester County, and Smithtown, all in New York.

¿Qué harías si todo los elementos de la vida que hoy consideras normal empezaran a desaparecer? No más teléfono celulares, no más servicios de música, no más películas en streaming, no más alertas de noticas, no más pagos en línea, no más personas a todos lados donde vayas ¿Qué tal si por primera vez en años tienes que enfrentarte al interrogante de quién eres tú, sin que haya equipos de fútbol, o géneros de música, o partidos políticos, o religiones que te definan? ¿A qué quedarás reducido?

Las anteriores son las preguntas sobre las que Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), basa la historia de Leave The World Behind (Título en Español: Dejar El Mundo Atrás), una película que combina magistralmente elementos de drama familiar, thriller psicológico, ciencia ficción y distopia apocalíptica. Ahora, si en medio de los barcos encallados, los aviones cayendo, los ataques cibernéticos, los conflictos interpersonales, y los intereses prohibidos, has quedado con una que otra duda, no te preocupes, porque a continuación y sin más preámbulos, damos inicio al análisis y explicación de… Dejar El Mundo Atrás.

1 ^ ¿Qué es lo que realmente sucede en Dejar El Mundo Atrás? ¿Es una invasión? ¿Una guerra? ¿Un ataque?

Hay dos claves principales para entender qué es lo que realmente sucede en la película. Y ambas tienen lugar justamente en los último minutos: 1) lo que G.H. (Mahershala Ali) le dice Clay después de dejar la casa de Danny (Kevin Bacon), y 2) lo que Rose (Farrah McKenzie) encuentra en la casa de los Throne, en el búnker nuclear que construyeron los vecinos de los Scott.

Ahora, en Dejar El Mundo Atrás, Estados Unidos se encuentra bajo un ataque coordinado con extraordinaria precisión, ejecutado por alguna organización que quiere tomar el poder del país y hacerlo con un muy bajo presupuesto. Tal como lo dijo George el plan tiene tres etapas: aislamiento, caos sincronizado y colapso.

La primera etapa consiste en lanzar un ataque masivo y coordinado a todo el sistema de comunicaciones y transporte del país. Por medio de un ejército de hackers, esta organización logró bloquear el Internet, la Radio, la Televisión y toda la comunicación satelital de los Estados Unidos, y logró penetrar la red de transporte que funciona con pilotos automáticos, como barcos petroleros, aviones, y por supuesto, autos eléctricos. De esta manera, no sólo la población del país está incomunicada, sino también inmovilizada, dejando recursos limitados en las ciudades por los que la población pronto entraría en conflicto.

La segunda etapa es el caos sincronizado, que básicamente busca alterar la psique de la población con ataques muy bien planificados. Y finalmente el colapso, causado por la misma población del país cuando luchen por sus recursos, o lo que es peor, cuando quieran eliminar la supuesta causa del caos.

2 ^ ¿Qué es el ruido que se escucha en toda la película?

El ruido que se escucha durante la película, tal y como Danny parece sugerir, es un arma sónica que utiliza microondas a altísima intensidad, que puede resultar en daños permanentes al cuerpo, tal y como le sucedió a Archie. El ruido es parte de la segunda etapa del ataque bajo el que se encuentra Estados Unidos, y en conjunto con los panfletos en árabe, en chino, o en coreano, que se encuentran por todo el país, dejan el camino libre para que se consuma la tercera etapa, el colapso.

3 ^ ¿Por qué se le cayeron los dientes a Archie? ¿Por qué los venados y otros animales se están comportando de manera extraña?

El efecto del arma sónica que están utilizando a lo largo del país no sólo genera alteraciones en los tejidos humanos, sino también en los animales, provocando que sus patrones de comportamiento se alteren, es por eso que vemos aves volando por cientos hacia Nueva York, o cientos de venados agrupándose, intentando escapar del extraño ruido.

4 ^ ¿Quién está bombardeando las ciudades en Estados Unidos?

El ataque parece una acción conjunta de elementos radicales dentro de Estados Unidos (que se encargaron de toda la parte de destrucción local), y elementos extranjeros, que con poco presupuesto, quieran destruir a Estados Unidos. Ahora, los panfletos tenían la clara intención de generar pánico entre la población y hacerles creer que estaban bajo un ataque inminente y que debían buscar refugio y provisiones a costa de lo que sea, creando en efecto una guerra civil.

Ahora, pasando a lo que vimos en el búnker de los Thorne, además de las temporadas de Buffy, la Cazavampiros, y de Friends, es un sistema de información que no se alteró con el ataque inicial, un osciloscopio, que puede detectar longitudes de onda minúsculas, o exageradamente grandes, que no se utilizan dentro de los canales normales de radio, televisión, o internet , y que indicaba que 1) Washington D.C. y otras ciudades están bajo ataque por Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes, y que 2) varios centros poblados se encuentran con altos niveles de radiación.

¿Qué es lo que está sucediendo entonces? El principal objetivo del ciberataque no era la población, era desconectar a las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos, razón por la cuál, tras el masivo ataque de desinformación, algunas de las bases armadas locales se dedicaron a tratar de controlar los principales centro urbanos, y una vez allí, eran atacados por otros grupos armados con armas nucleares, a los que se les hizo creer que dentro de esas ciudades estaba el enemigo.

5 ^ ¿Quién está detrás del ataque sincronizado?

Sí resulta muy interesante que Danny confirmara en un periódico físico que los funcionarios rusos en Estados Unidos hayan abandonado la embajada para volver a Moscú. Y también es notorio que ninguno de los panfletos que se mencionaron esté en ruso. Así que, dentro del contexto de la película, quién está detrás del caos de Estados Unidos es Rusia.

6 ^ ¿Por qué Amanda Sandford odia a las personas?

Amanda Sandford, interpretada de manera formidable por Julia Roberts es un caso típico de misantropía.

La misantropía es una actitud o conducta que se caracteriza por el rechazo a tratar con otros seres humanos. El término procede del vocablo griego misanthrōpía. El misántropo experimenta una aversión hacia las personas en general. No se trata de disgusto por un individuo en particular o por un grupo de sujetos, sino por el género humano en su conjunto debido a ciertas características de la especie. [1]

La misantropía no es un trastorno psicológico, que deba tratarse con medicinas, como parece ser la tendencia estos días para todo, es un punto de vista que proviene generalmente de experiencias negativas alrededor de la construcción y contexto social de donde proviene el individuo. Para Amanda, su trabajo, en el que debe leer muy bien a las personas, para venderles cosas que no necesitan, le ha permitido vislumbrar que los seres humanos, en general, e incluyéndose ella misma, son una especie que arrasa con todo, sólo por cumplir unos estándares frívolos y superficiales ante otras personas con los que no tienen más vínculos que compartir espacios en común.

Sin embargo, el arco de Amanda en la película pasa por entender que la causa de su misantropía es precisamente la necesidad que tiene de otras personas y de no se autosuficiente, y en eso Ruth (Myha’la) tiene mucho que ver, porque a pesar de que ella también considera que el ser humano, en general, es un elemento negativo, entiende que la definición propia del ser es inútil sino pasa por los lazos que se tienden con otras personas.

7 ^ ¿Qué significa el final de Dejar El Mundo Atrás?

Dejar El Mundo Atrás, es peculiar por no tener un final explícito, dejando en apariencia, un final abierto a interpretación. Pero no es así. La película, si bien no muestra explícitamente qué va a suceder, si deja todos los cabos cerrados, siendo muy fácil inferir que va a suceder, y aquí les dejamos la lista:

  1. Rose finalmente puede ver el capítulo final de Friends en la casa de los Thorne.
  2. Amanda y Ruth encuentran a Rose, y por tanto encuentran el búnker donde pueden permanecer y sobrevivir hasta que las cosas se calmen.
  3. Los Scott y los Sandford forman una alianza para sobrevivir, una vez la guerra civil se expanda hacia los territorios suburbanos y rurales.

8 ^ ¿Cuál es el mensaje de la película Dejar El Mundo Atrás?

La película tiene dos mensajes, el humano y el político. El humano es encarnado por el personaje de Julia Roberts, que pone de hecho que lo que nos hace humanos, dignos y capaces de sobrevivir incluso a las peores adversidades, son los lazos que formamos cuando consideramos a otros tan dignos como nosotros mismos, cuando nos ponemos en la misma balanza, a pesar de nuestras diferencias y errores. Sin esa consideración, pronto simplemente caemos, esto también demostrado por Clay, que si no hubiese tenido ese gran sentido de confianza con otros, como lo tuvo con George, y luego con Danny, posiblemente no hubiese sobrevivido.

Ahora el mensaje político es mucho más sutil pero está plenamente conectado con el anterior. No es una sorpresa que estamos en un mundo bajo una etérea guerra cibernética, donde la forma más sencilla de destruir un país es forzando a su población a no considerar como seres humanos a sus mismos compatriotas, a que suspendan cualquier clase de comunicación con alguien que es y piensa diferente (aislamiento), que entren en pánico al creer que ese otro bando es su enemigo y afecta su supervivencia (caos sincronizado) y luego a salir a las calles a destruirse entre ellos mismos (estallido social, paros). Estados Unidos, Chile, Colombia, Francia y Ecuador son sólo algunos ejemplos donde ha ocurrido esta misma idea que se extrapola en la película.

No es que Dejar El Mundo Atrás nos advierta de algo que pueda pasar, es que nos informa de algo que ya ha pasado, de cómo somos manipulados dentro de nuestras propias fronteras, a través de las redes sociales, y como salimos, como borregos, a odiarnos unos contra otros, mientras una minoría disfruta del dinero y del poder que se les entrega en medio del caos. Un certero golpe de estado. ¿Hasta cuándo vamos a ser víctimas de este tipo de manipulación? ¿Hasta dónde seremos capaces de llegar?

Bonus ^ ¿De quién es la cabaña en el bosque y de quién es la silueta que aparece en las hojas?

Bueno, antes que nada hay que recordar que Dejar El Mundo Atrás se basa en la novela homónima escrita por Rumaan Alam, que ha indicado en varias entrevistas que escribió su libro aprovechando y al mismo tiempo alterando los espacios comunes del terror, como por ejemplo, la familia que sale de viaje, los extraños que tocan la puerta a media noche, los animales rodeando una casa, la cabaña en el bosque y las extrañas figuras marcadas en el piso. Generalmente estos clichés se desarrollan en algo aterrador y letal, a medida que las historias progresan, pero en el libro y en la película son solo indicios de que algo malo puede ocurrir, pero que al final nunca llega. Así que la marca de la persona en la cabaña es simplemente de alguien que renta una de las cosas locales para cazar y usa esa posición para descansar entre disparos. No más.
