Encanto | Ending Explained

Have you ever felt excluded from your family? Maybe you haven’t felt as smart, or as good-looking, or as classy, or as successful as the people around you? If so, how did that make you feel? What did you do about it?

These were the questions directors Byron Howard ( Bolt, Tangled, Zootopia ) and Jared Bush ( Zootopia, Moana ) kept in mind to bring Encanto to the big screen. Encanto is Disney’s 60th animated film, and also Disney’s first animated film that takes place entirely in South America, in my beautiful country, Colombia.

Now, if in the middle of the wax palms, the arepas, the buñuelos, the nice coffee, the magic candles, the terrifying visions, and the secrets of the past, you have been left with doubts, or questions about the film, do not worry, because now, and without further ado, we’ll talk about Encanto in deep, and we will figure out what the ending means.

Let’s go for it!

1 | Where does Encanto’s magic come from?

Encanto’s magic stems from a miracle that occurred after Alma Madrigal (María Cecilia Botero) witnessed the murder of her husband Pedro, the father of her triplets. Alma was so deeply affected that she wished from the bottom of her heart, to separate herself and her children from such violence.

Her plea caused the surrounding mountains to close around the spot, preventing the passage to and from that place. The magic was channeled into a candle with the figure of a butterfly, which always remained lit, but the big question that remains is: who listened to Alma? Who caused the miracle? The answer is in the house.

When Mirabel first saw the cracks in the house, she was able to see faint symbols on the clay tiles that fell from the ceiling. Then we see these symbols again in the mysterious cave of Bruno. These symbols come from an indigenous culture, so it can be assumed that it is a local deity, which due to the geographical location of El Encanto, would necessarily have to be a Quimbaya deity, a pre-Columbian culture whose spirituality is associated with harmony and nature.

And although the candle that never goes out is the bridge between the deity and the Madrigal, the most interesting thing is not the candle, it is the house. La Casita.

2 | What really is the Casita in Encanto?

Disney usually animates things like teapots, candles, chairs, and even volcanoes, giving them life, giving little or no explanation about it. Or have you ever asked why the cups in Beauty and the Beast could speak?

However, in Encanto the matter of the house, la Casita, is very interesting. Although at first glance it seems to be simply an effect of the always-lit candle, what really seems to happen is that while the candle serves as a bridge, it is the house that is the origin of all magic and therefore, it is the physical manifestation of the spirit who heard Alma’s plea.

This spirit, to stay on this plane requires harmony.

3 | Why was the House cracking? Why was the Encanto dying out?

Whatever the source of the magic, it requires that there be harmony around it in order to manifest itself, however, as it became clear that the Madrigals were the only ones touched by this power, Abuela Alma began to assume that her responsibility, and that of his family was to maintain this magic, even at the cost of sacrificing the wishes and desires of each one of them.

Alma saw this guardianship as a privilege, a privilege that comes from the sacrifice of living exclusively to serve her community. But the truth is that magic, more than sacrifice, demanded harmony from them, which was destroyed by Abuela’s demands.

4 | Could the people in El Encanto get out of there?

The darkest thing about this story, and what is barely talked about in the film, is that – as Bruno said – once inside El Encanto it was impossible to leave. All the inhabitants of El Encanto are those who fled along with Pedro and Alma and their descendants. Very similar to the exodus of Jose Arcadio Buendía and Ursula Iguarán, which ended in the founding of Macondo, in One Hundred Years of Solitude.

However, one has to wonder if anyone was ever frustrated for that reason, and if that could be a cause for unsolvable conflict in the future. Would you feel good about living in Paradise, on the condition that you will never be able to leave?

5 | In what part of Colombia does Encanto take place?

Unquestionably in the Coffee Region. Or by extension, anywhere in the Colombian Central Mountain Range. Although there are many cultures and many ethnic groups in El Encanto, the type of vegetation, the climate and even the mountains are the same that can be seen in that area of ​​Colombia.

6 | And why are there people of all ethnicities in El Encanto?

If you have ever been in Colombia, you could notice there are Colombians from a wide range of ethnicities, thanks to the mix of the three main source groups: White (European), Black (African) and Native-American. So, it is easy to find within the same area people from these three ethnicities and everything in the mix. Also, every region in Colombia is unique in their cultural expressions. We can see not only different ethnicities in Encanto, but also different cultural expressions, like the culture of the Colombian Caribbean, or the Colombian Pacific, or the Colombian Andean Region. But why?

The Colombian coffee zone has always been full of people from all corners of Colombia, since the coffee harvesting process always requires a large number of employees. It would not be strange at all if among the people who fled the town under attack, there were people from all over Colombia, from the Atlantic Coast, the Pacific Coast, the Altiplano. It would then be like a Colombian microcosm where all the cultures of the country coexist, or at least those that were represented by the people who fled the town.

7 | Why wasn’t Mirabel gifted like the rest of the Madrigals?

Let’s speculate a little – the spirit that keeps El Encanto had to feel at some point that harmony was fading away, either because of the frustration of not being able to leave the town, or because of envy of the Madrigals, and that those negative feelings would eventually destroy everything. However, the isolation of the village was linked to the miracle of the candle – because that was Alma’s wish. The only way to avoid the total destruction of the town was to change the original miracle, and let a new one began to shine. For this, the harmony within the Madrigal had to be altered and what better way to alter a family than the appearance of someone different within them? That’s where Mirabel comes in.

By not giving gifts to Maribel, this spirit simply planted the seed that would lead to chaos, which Bruno managed to see in his visions.

8 | Why did Bruno hide from his family?

Because he wanted to protect Mirabel from her grandmother’s rigidity, especially from her obsession with preserving magic at the cost of the happiness of her family members. If Alma had known from the start that Mirabel was connected to the destruction of magic, she would probably have banished her from El Encanto, fracturing the family forever.

Bruno did not want to reveal how little he had seen in his vision of the future, so he simply left, although he did not get very far high in the mountains. And finally he hid in the hidden part of his own house.

9 | What is the message of the movie Encanto?

The most important message of Encanto is to recognize each member of our family as valuable; Many times we tend to minimize people close to us, because they are not so outgoing, or so smart, or so attractive, or so elegant, or so successful, or simply because they are the so-called Black Sheep. But not because something is different, it means that it has to be minimized, much less destroyed. It is definitely a call to be unconditional in the fact of loving our family.

Likewise, there is a hidden message in the film. Abuela Alma represents the past trauma of violence, and above all the fear of suffering such violence again. That trauma and that fear generated that the new generations had to pay with their happiness for the Abuela’s need to feel safe. What Mirabel represents is a new way of seeing the world, a new perspective on how to heal and maintain magic.

Perhaps, those of us who experience violence in Colombia or anywhere in the world are afraid of returning to that darkness that for so many years gripped our people, and that is why we tend to be rigid and strict, but perhaps it is good, perhaps not to change from one day to the next, but to give the opportunity for other perspectives, other points of view to appear and propose new ways of healing.

Encanto | Análisis y Explicación

¿Alguna vez te has sentido excluido de tu familia? ¿Quizás no te sientes tan inteligente, o tan guapo, o tan elegante, o tan exitoso como las personas más cercanas a tu vida? Si fue así ¿Cómo te hizo sentir eso? ¿Qué hiciste al respecto?

Las anteriores preguntas fueron las preguntas que los directores Byron Howard (Bolt, Enredados, Zootopia) y Jared Bush (Zootopia, Moana) tienen entre manos para traer a la pantalla grande Encanto, la película animada número 60 de Disney, película que además es la primera película animada de Disney que transcurre completamente en América del Sur, orgullosamente en mi país, Colombia.

Ahora, si en medio de las palmas de cera, las arepas, los buñuelos, el café, las velas mágicas, las visiones aterradoras, y los secretos del pasado, has quedado con dudas, o interrogantes sobre la película, no te preocupes, que a continuación y sin más antesala, damos inicio al análisis y explicación de ¡Encanto!

¡Empecemos!

1 | ¿De dónde sale la magia de Encanto?

La magia de Encanto se deriva de un milagro ocurrido luego que Alma Madrigal (María Cecilia Botero) presenciara el asesinato de su esposo Pedro, el padre de sus trillizos. Alma estaba tan profundamente afectada por el hecho que deseó, desde el fondo de su corazón, aislar para siempre a sus hijos de lo que le recordaba dicha desgracia.

Su suplica provocó que las montañas alrededor se cerraran sobre ella, evitando el paso desde y hacia ese lugar, y que la magia se canalizó en una vela con la figura de una mariposa, que siempre permanecía encendida, pero la gran pregunta que queda es ¿quién escuchó a Alma? ¿quién provocó el milagro? La respuesta está en la casa.

Cuando Mirabel tuvo la visión de las grietas por primera vez, logró ver unos símbolos tenues sobre las tejas de barro que cayeron del techo. Luego volvemos a ver dichos símbolos en la misteriosa cueva de Bruno. Estos símbolos provienen de una cultura indígena, por lo que se puede asumir que se trata de una deida local, que por la ubicación geográfica de El Encanto, tendría por fuerza que ser una deidad quimbaya, cultura precolombina cuya espiritualidad está asociada a la armonía y la naturaleza.

Y aunque la vela que nunca se apaga es el puente entre la deidad y los Madrigal, lo más interesante no es la vela, sino la casa.

2 | ¿Qué es realmente la Casa de Encanto?

En Disney suelen animar cosas como teteras, velas, sillas, y hasta volcanes, dándoles vida, aunque sin dar mucha explicación al respecto. ¿O alguno se ha puesto a preguntar por qué los pocillos de La Bella y la Bestia hablaban?

Sin embargo en Encanto es interesante el asunto de la casa. Aunque a primera vista pareciera ser simplemente un efecto de la vela siempre-encendida, lo que realmente parece suceder es que mientras que la vela sirve como puente, es la casa el origen de toda la magia y por tanto, es la manifestación física del espíritu que escuchó la súplica de Alma.

Este espíritu, para sostenerse en este plano requiere de armonía.

3 | ¿Por qué la Casa se estaba agrietando? ¿Por qué el Encanto se estaba extinguiendo?

Cualquiera que sea la fuente de la magia, esta requiere que exista armonía a su alrededor para poder manifestarse, sin embargo, a medida que fue claro que los Madrigal eran los únicos tocados por dicho poder, la Abuela Alma empezó a asumir que su responsabilidad, y la de su familia era la de mantener dicha magia, incluso a costa del sacrificio de los deseos y anhelos de cada uno de sus miembros.

Alma creía entender que esa calidad de guardianes era un privilegio, que venía el sacrificio de vivir exclusivamente para servir a su comunidad. Pero lo cierto es que la magia más que el sacrificio, les exigía armonía, misma que se destruyó por las exigencias de la Abuela.

4 | ¿Los habitantes de Encanto podían salir de allí?

Lo más tenebroso de esta historia, y de lo que casi no se habla en la película, es que – como dijo Bruno -, una vez dentro de El Encanto era imposible salir. Todos los habitantes de El Encanto son los que huyeron junto a Pedro y Alma y los descendientes de los mismos. Muy parecido al éxodo de Jose Arcadio Buendía y Ursula Iguarán, que terminó en la fundación de Macondo.

Sin embargo, habría que preguntarse si alguien alguna vez estuvo frustrado por esa razón, y si eso podría ser una causa de conflicto irresoluble en el futuro. ¿Te sentirías bien de vivir en el Paraiso, con la condición de que nunca podrás salir de allí?

5 | ¿En qué parte de Colombia tiene lugar Encanto?

Indiscutiblemente en el Eje Cafetero. O por extensión, en cualquier lugar de la Cordillera Central Colombiana. Aunque hay muchas culturas y muchas etnias en el lugar, el tipo de vegetación, el clima y hasta las montañas son las mismas que se pueden apreciar en esa zona de Colombia.

6 | ¿Y por qué hay gente de todas las etnias en El Encanto?

La zona cafetera de Colombia siempre ha estado llena de gente de todos los rincones de Colombia, ya que el proceso de recolección del café siempre requiere un elevado número de empleados. No sería para nada extraño que dentro de la gente que huyó del pueblo bajo ataque, hubiese gente de todas partes de Colombia, de la Costa Atlántica, del Pacífico, del Altiplano Cundiboyacense. Sería entonces como un microcosmos colombiano donde conviven todas las culturas del país, o al menos las que estaban representadas por las personas que huyeron del pueblo.

7 | ¿Por qué Mirabel no tuvo dones como sus tíos, hermanos y primos?

Entrando en el terreno de lo meramente especulativo, el espíritu que mantenía El Encanto tuvo que sentir en algún momento que se perdía la armonía ya sea por la frustración de no poder salir del pueblo, o por envidia a los Madrigal, y que esos sentimientos negativos eventualmente destruirían todo, sin embargo, el aislamiento del poblado estaba vinculado al milagro de la vela – porque ese fue el deseo de Alma. Es así como la única manera de evitar la destrucción total del poblado era cambiar el milagro original, y que empezara a brillar uno nuevo. Para esto, la armonía dentro de los Madrigal debía alterarse y ¿qué mejor manera de alterar a una familia que la aparición de alguien diferente dentro de ellos? Ahí es donde entra Mirabel.

Al no brindarle dones a Maribel, este espíritu simplemente plantó la semilla que desembocaría en el caos, mismo que logró ver Bruno.

8 | ¿Por qué Bruno se escondió de su familia?

Porque quiso proteger a Mirabel de la rigidez de su abuela, sobre todo de su obsesión con preservar la magia al costo de la felicidad de sus miembros de su familia. Si Alma hubiese sabido desde el inicio que Mirabel estaba conectada a la destrucción de la magia, probablemente la hubiese desterrado de El Encanto, lo que fracturaría para siempre a la familia.

Bruno no quería revelar lo poco que había visto en su visión del futuro, así que simplemente se fue, aunque no llegó muy lejos por lo alto de las montañas. Y finalmente se escondió en la parte oculta de su propia casa.

9 | ¿Cuál es el mensaje de la película Encanto?

El mensaje más importante de Encanto es el de reconocer como valioso a cada miembro de nuestra familia; muchas veces tendemos a minimizar a personas cercanas a nosotros, porque no son tan extrovertidos, o tan inteligentes, o tan atractivos, o tan elegantes, o tan exitosos, o simplemente porque son la mal llamada La Oveja Negra. Pero no porque algo sea diferente, significa que haya que minimizarlo y mucho menos destruirlo. Es en definitiva un llamado a ser incondicionales en el hecho de amar a nuestra familia.

Así mismo, hay un mensaje oculto en la película. La Abuela Alma representa el trauma del pasado de la violencia, y sobre todo el temor de sufrir nuevamente dicha violencia. Ese trauma y ese temor generó que las nuevas generaciones tuvieran que pagar con su felicidad la necesidad de la Abuela de sentirse segura. Lo que Mirabel representa es una nueva manera de ver el mundo, una nueva perspectiva sobre como sanar y mantener la magia.

Quizás, nosotros, los que vivimos la violencia en Colombia o en cualquier lugar del mundo tenemos temor de volver a esa oscuridad que por tantos años se apoderó de nuestro país, y por eso tendemos a ser rígidos y estrictos, pero quizás es bueno, quizás no cambiar de un día para otro, pero sí dar la oportunidad de que otras perspectivas, otros puntos de vistas aparezcan y propongan nuevas manera de sanar.
